Iyo ōhgami

Fearsome demons seem to come alive on Iyo ōhgami’s teaware and sake-ware. While the practice of engraving demons on sake cups – known as kimen cups – is centuries old, few such pieces feature decoration as deft – or as lifelike – as hers.

ōhgami’s pieces are patterned on the centuries-old yappō-nirami – “all-seeing” – style: No matter what the angle, the demons that decorate her work seem to be staring right at the viewer.

“I file away particularly memorable ancient Japanese objects and traditions – noh masks, or Buddhist sculptures – in my memory and try to incorporate some small element of them into my own work," Miyo says. "For example, carvers of wooden Buddhas will occasionally use inlay techniques to create the eyes. While this would be extremely difficult to replicate in clay, I try to achieve the same visual effect."

The demons she creates, too, take inspiration from older works and Buddhist scenes – though the results are thoroughly of ōhgami’s own creation.

As is apparent at a mere glance, each of ōhgami's pieces takes a sizable amount of time to create – so much so that achieving adequate quantity is one of her chief worries. Once she has shaped the rough outlines of a pot or cup, ōhgami shapes every small aspect of the demon's features – an eyebrow, or the mouth – from shreds of clay, and then carves in detail for an even more realistic expression. Then comes colored glaze, and multiple rounds in the kiln, before the piece is at last complete.

ōhgami has even expanded her repertoire of late, adding dragons and mythic characters to some of her pieces.

Iyo ōhgami was born in 1987 in the Tachikui section of Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture – home of Tamba-ware. Her family has worked in that rustic style since the Edo period, which ran from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Her great-grandfather inaugurated the ōhkuma workshop, where ōhgami now works.

As a child, ōhgami loved to draw, and eventually ended up at the Kyoto City University of Arts a short way from her hometown. By that time, she had moved into ceramics and begun to craft a variety of figures, from animals to human dolls.

ōhgami had often incorporated demon patterns into her work, but did not begin to create kimen sake cups until a friend suggested she give it a try. Her first attempts turned out well, and the cups and other demon-bearing pieces have since become her signature works.

In the future, ōhgami says, she hopes to add Buddhas and all manner of spirits, monsters and mythic beasts to her ceramic pantheon.
